The areolate grouper is a medium-sized saltwater fish known for its short, deep body shape. It inhabits seagrass beds and fine sediment bottoms near rocky reefs and coral in shallow coastal waters. This species forms spawning aggregations and feeds primarily on smaller fish and crustaceans.

Found in shallow continental shelf waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, often near seagrass beds, rocky reefs, and coral at depths from 6 to 200 meters.
