Atlantic herring is a schooling fish known for its streamlined body and important role in marine ecosystems. It feeds mainly on tiny crustaceans and small fish larvae and is a key prey species for many larger predators. Anglers seek Atlantic herring both for sport and as bait for larger game fish.
Where they live
Found in shallow to deep coastal and offshore waters of the North Atlantic, including brackish zones. Common around North America and Europe, from near surface down to depths of about 360 meters.
