The Atlantic midshipman is a small, elongated saltwater fish known for its habitat on shallow offshore banks. It is not typically targeted by anglers as a game fish. This species dwells mainly over mud or sand bottoms and can be found from shallow waters down to 100 meters.

Found over mud or sand bottoms on shallow offshore banks in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico regions. Usually in depths from 1 to 100 meters, more common offshore than inshore.
