The Ruffe is a small, spiny freshwater fish known for its tough nature and distinctive dorsal fin. It typically inhabits lakes and slow-moving streams, favoring sandy or gravelly bottoms. Equipped with sensitive head canals, it can feed effectively in low light or at night using its lateral line system.
Where they live
Found in freshwater and brackish waters of North America, Europe, and Asia, Ruffe inhabit lakes, quiet pools, and stream margins. They prefer deep waters with sandy and gravel substrates, ranging from shallow areas to depths of around 85 meters.
