The sand smelt is a small, elongated fish found in schools along coastal and brackish waters. It is a carnivorous species that feeds mainly on tiny crustaceans and fish larvae. This species is popular with anglers targeting small saltwater fish.
Where they live
Commonly found in shallow littoral zones up to 10 meters deep, the sand smelt inhabits brackish and saltwater regions, including parts of the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. It often schools near shorelines and tolerates low-salinity waters.
