The schoolmaster snapper is a strong game fish found in warm coastal waters. It is known for its association with coral reefs and elkhorn corals. Juveniles often inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms near seagrass and mangroves.

Found in shallow clear warm waters over coral reefs in the Atlantic Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Juveniles frequent sand and muddy bottoms including lagoons and mangroves; sometimes enters brackish water.
